Travelogue: Lunan Bay, Scotland
11 November, 2024
Have you ever stayed in a farmhouse that doubles as an inn?
I have! Well, I did for the first time last November in Lunan Bay.
I follow this photographer, John Murray Jr., on Instagram. He takes amazing images all over Scotland, and I discovered Lunan Bay through what he shares. It inspired me to find a spot to stay on the road trip I took through Scotland last November.
When I was booking things, I thought I was booking a regular inn, however, when I arrived, I found it was part of a farm with horses, chickens, sheep, and other varied furry friends. It was also just a few (and by few I mean about 5-10 minute) walk to the water.
I arrived just a little before sunset, and with the way the clouds were showing up that evening, I knew it would be quite lovely. But I had to get checked in and sorted for the night. When I got there, I had this idea that I might just be the only person staying there, as my car was the only car in the lot. But of course, that wasn’t the case.
As I checked in, the manager offered me a few options for my room, since there were so few of us. I ended up in a larger room than expected, with a view of the land and sunset.
Once I got checked in and things loaded into the room, I realised sunset was happening soon. So I wandered around, seeking silhouettes of the trees against the glorious sky. But I have to say, I missed most of the great colours!
The next morning, I got up in time to get to the beach as the sun was coming up. I have to say I love, love, love spending time near the coast, it’s a method of meditation and mental health.
Listening, looking, smelling, and observing. I can spend hours slowly wandering across the beach, taking in these views.
On this day, I spent maybe an hour, because I wanted to get on the road to enjoy a slow drive to the next destination. But I took my time to just watch the sun rise.
