Scenes from the Ferry with the Fujifilm X100V

Released over 5 years ago, the Fujifilm X100V remains one of my favourite cameras. It’s a great camera for capturing everyday life. It’s small, compact, yet robust.

The built-in 23mm f/2 lens provides a focal length that is great for a broad variety of subject matter, from those wide-angle frames, showing a city skyline, to more detailed elements of a space. This lens also gets me moving around a bit, since it is a prime lens, I move, left and right, or head upstairs, or downstairs to change the point of view.

The compact size of the Fujifilm X100 series cameras, means it can fit in just about any bag I own, and I can carry it all day without feeling like I’m weighed down by a big bag of gear.

There’s a bit of joy in that challenge of working with one camera, one lens, as well. That “limitation” can push us to be a little more creative in our compositions, or push us to see something in a new way.

I love to hop on a ferry to capture the city from a different perspective, and enjoy the sounds and smells of the bay. Yes, the smells! There’s something calming and relaxing of that ferry ride across Elliott Bay.

On a sunny day, we can seek out deep shadows, and highlight lines and framing elements. On this day, it was sunny, not a cloud in the sky. I feel like these blue skies help the water seem even more blue.

I also love using the windows for reflections or framing elements. And the challenge of finding new compositions in an everyday environment.
